Need some help:

I'm sure there's a place this should go, but I'm honestly too lazy to look. Anyway here goes

I have AT&T and I've been wanting to get a new phone instead of this crappy Nokia I have. A friend of mine who is on Verizon is selling his Droid 2 so he can get the iPhone when it comes out for Verizon. I'm buying it for 175 and its in good condition. I have a few questions and I figured here would be the place to ask:

1. Can I unlock the phone like any other phone? I know this may seem dumb but I'm legitimately curious.

2. If I unlock it, can I use it for AT&T? I've heard people say you can, but these aren't very reputable sources.

3. If I do all this, will my phone be functional? I don't have a data plan, and have no desire to get one right now, so is that a problem?

If anyone has answers to I'm sure stupid questions, leave a reply in here or VM/PM me. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums!

This is the right sub-forum to ask those questions.

I can handle the easy one - Verizon uses CDMA radio technology, AT&T does not - you can't use a Verizon phone on AT&T.

1. yes.. it can be unlocked

2. like Earlymon said.. NO. 2 differnet networks...Verizon is CDMA.. att is GSM. The other large CDMA newtork (sprint) will not allow you to use it on their network.

3. N/A... will not work. see #2

you might be able to take a smaller regional (CDMA) network... like MetroPCS.. and get it to work. But I recommend you do a little more research to confirm.

Ah damn. Alright guys thanks so much for the help. Glad I came here before buying the phone. Just gonna buy another buddie's old iPhone for 36 bucks sadly. Much rather have the Droid to be honest. Thanks again for all the help! If I ever get an Android phone, I'll be back lol

No, it cannot be unlocked. Unlocking isn't relevant to CDMA devices except for hybrid CDMA/GSM devices (world phones). The subsidy lock is what prevents the use of another carrier's SIM card in a GSM device.

Much rather have the Droid to be honest.
You'd have to switch to Verizon for any Droid (though they can be flashed for some other CDMA carriers).
