Need some info in basic emglish regarding Skype

I am travelling to St Maarten next week and was told that I could download Skype to my TMobile G1 phone
and make relatively inexpensive calls back to Florida and to relatives already there who also have downloaded Skype. When I went on the Skype site, it allowed me to download "Skype Lite" but I still don't understand how it works and if it will save me money. Can someone help out with answers in plain english unlike the technical talk I get on Skype site.
