Help Need to reboot after replacing data for an app?

Do you really need to reboot after replacing data for an app with a backup? If so, why? What are the consequences of not rebooting?

As an example, RerWare's MyBackup Pro allows the user to backup and restore the data for any app. After restoring the data for any app, MyBackup Pro instructs the user that it is essential to reboot the device. It does not explain the consequences of not rebooting or why the reboot is necessary.

As a followup question, is this a limitation of MyBackup Pro that is not present in other backup/restore utilities?

If you restore data files that are open, the program that has the file open will still be using the old data until restarted.

Thanks. If the app is the only app using the data files, and the app is closed, would that be as good as a reboot? Or is there more to it?
