Root Need to Un-Root & Wipe SD Card

Hey all,

I need to un-root my phone. I recently switched devices and would like to get my Droid ready to be sold. My goal is to get back to stock Android and get the SD card formatted. The last part I am sure I can figure out, but I'm not sure how to get my phone back to stock. I used Easy Root to, well, root it.

I've never heard of Swappa before... safe and legit? It sure would be a lot easier.

As for protecting my personal data, how can I make sure all my info is off the phone? Is that sort of data stored in the backups? So if I reinstall the current ROM, would someone be able to pull up a prior backup and get all that info?
 
I just bought TWO rooted & ROMmed Droids of Swappa in the last two weeks and it is quite legit. As far as security, I would

  • Format the SD card in a PC slot
  • Fully charge the battery
  • Move the ROM of your choice to the freshly-formatted SD card
  • Go into Recovery and wipe data/cache/system/boot
  • Install the ROM and reboot.

When the Google Activation screen comes up, power off the Droid and sell it. The buyers will likely flash the ROM of their choice on it anyway (I did), and your data is completely GONE.

The criteria for Swappa is clear and ready to activate ESN, flawless screen and perfect performance. Slight cosmetic blemishes are acceptable, just note them in the listing. Pics are always good.

Swappa gets like $5 from the sale of your Droid and you get the rest. Not a bad site, and getting better all the time. If you include the SD card and accessories you can expect to fetch a competitive price for it.
 
Thanks for the info. You want to buy a third? ;-) Near flawless Droid, pristine screen and case. Only a couple extremely minor pinhead-sized nicks in the metal around the screen.
 
Let's see: my son is happy with his Droid Eris, I have a Droid, Darling Bride has a Droid (no clue what to do with it, but she has one :P ) and daughter has a Droid. Unless I need one for the dog, I think I'm set on Droids for awhile...

Thanks for the offer, though. I'm SURE someone around here can always use a spare Droid...

Had you done this 2 weeks ago I would have bought it :rolleyes:
 
Ok, I am feeling really stupid... I am running Dew's smoked glass charity mod from late 2010, with Froyo 2.2. At the time I was using a few different programs for flashing ROMs and creating backups. Now... I cant remember what the hell I was doing. I've been so happy with this mod I havent done any tweaking in months. Now I cant even find these apps in my app drawer. I have completely lost the skillz I had for this.
 
Uh, as far as flashing ROMs and backups go, I would imagine ROM Manager would be up there on the list. You have that one? :confused:

Otherwise backups and ROM flashing are done in Recovery...
 
Ok, got the SD card formatted. Wiped the user data and cache. Flashed the new ROM. Rebooted and got to the Google Activation screen. I skipped through all that and got to the desktop and did some poking around to verify everything. Then I made a mistake and tried to redo everything so it would be back at the Google activation screen the next time someone turned it on...

And now I am stuck in a rebooting cycle. It goes to the white Motorola logo and stays there til I remove the battery. Even if I hold X while booting and go to recovery it just reboots within 10-15 seconds of getting in to the recovery menu.

What the deuce?
 
Finally got in to recovery long enough to do redo the wipe/flash/reboot cycle one more time. Was able to complete it and now I am back at the Google Activation screen.

Think I am safe to sell it? I have no idea why it was rebooting non-stop and it would seriously suck to sell it to someone and have that happen when they tried to power it up.
 
That's a good sign... you can pull the battery and try two things:

Boot into recovery using x+power... and then
Boot normally.

If you can do both things without random reboots, the phone is safe to sell. If random reboots persist, then we have some troubleshooting to do.
