Help need to unmount SD to install apps from Play??

After changing carriers, and thus fiddling with the SIM tray, suddenly I have major trouble downloading apps and/or updating them from the Play Store. The store will throw various error codes at me. The last code was 963. As instructed I cleared the cache of my store app, etc. Nothing worked. Then I found this.
This works for me, no idea WHY. More important than why, I want to avoid having to unmount (virtual eject) the SD, then re-mount every time I want to get or update an app.
Any ideas?

I've never heard of that. Have you done anything to tell the phone to install to SD by default?

(Not that that should cause such a problem, just that I can't think why the SD card would matter otherwise).

Thanks, and good guess. But one extra oddity here is that maybe 1 out of 5 apps will install without this unmount process, and they install onto the internal memory. And no I haven't ever tried to set up the SD as a default app space. A couple of factory resets ago I did have an app I used to manually move apps to the SD.

Today I did unmount the SD card, went to PlayStore/MyApps/Libraries ('libraries'??) which allowed me to see many apps I'd tried to install, a nice long list, each item with an Install button. which worked. Then I did remount the SD. So this way I can just test out app installs intermittently when I'm willing to do the extra SD steps. Not too bad.

Having running apps with screen overlay access will defeat app installation.

Hmm, interesting thanks. I looked up screen overlay access and found articles. Firstly, the only app I usually leave running (enough to show up under the usual square button) is my AIReader eBook reader. So I just looked into Settings/Apps/setts/DrawOver and a. I have like 55 apps set to draw over, almost all my apps, , and b. oddly my AIReader isn't even on the list. Are you suggesting I turn that off for all the apps? Or use some Utility to force-quit running but invisible apps? So, I quit the reader, went to PlayStore, and still get the 963 error when trying to install apps.
