Root Need to wipe clean my rooted D3

Shurple

Android Enthusiast
I used Pete's One Click to root my phone and get rid of (before I knew about Freezing) the bloat.

I need to wipe clean my phone and start over since the POS (yes dung) locks up and I do a battery pull daily now.

Is there a link to a thread somewhere on how to do this? Everything was fine at first but it's gotten consistently laggy and crashes are daily at this point.

edit: I have not installed any ROMS. I'm stock.

I just saw this thread http://androidforums.com/droid-3-all-things-root/512171-droid-3-unroot-factory-reset-superuser.html

Is it true if i wipe it i wont lose the root? because that would be AWESOME! I dont want to unroot it if i dont have to. I love not having the bloat crap. I think my apps are conflicting with each other and i dont know which ones... so i'll do away with them all and only install what i need.

If you wipe data, you retain root, but lose everything. SuperUser should remain though, because IIRC, its owner is the root of the phone and this will survive a wipe.

Well you should no that a simple factory reset/data wipe wont fix system apps that you removed. In order to do that you will have to restore /system with petes script, or do a full sbf.

I don't think he wants the bloat back. Just his settings and current apps wiped.

..she lol.

I dont know what a sbf is ... i dont want the bloat back. I just want my phone to stop locking up, crashing, rebooting, or turning back on when i turn it off.

so i know it's an app causing it but dont know which one so i'll just clean it up and start over. I want to keep root and dont want to restore bloat.

I guess nobody answered your question. I think it's pretty simple - from home, settings->privacy->factory data reset.

If this does not solve your problem, it's possible that you were overzealous when you deleted system apps, and restoring the phone to unrooted state, with all system apps and "bloat" and going through the process again is the answer. That's harder, so factory reset is a good first step.

This is somewhat simplified, but system apps and pre-installed "bloatware" are stored in a partition on the phone called /system. User data and users apps are stored in a partition called /data, and Dalvik cache files are stored in a partition called /cache. A factory reset wipes the apps and data in /data and /cache but touches nothing in /system. The good news is that the rooting process changes some files in /system, and adds a few more, so a factory reset does not make you lose root - these files are not changed, deleted, etc.

cool!!! Ok i'll do that tonight (after I back up everything).... thanks much!!

edit: regarding deleting bloat.... I have a general rule that if i'm not 100% sure, i dont delete. So i only deleted the actual apps I dont use that dont control my contacts, texts, or email or social media. I got rid of Citrix, and some things that i dont remember right now, but they were the bloat installed like a PC ..

BTW, I did a factory reset for the heck of it after I typed all of that, just to verify that it retained root. It did - I was able to install Titanium and batch restore all of my apps.

hehe well I also did it and i did get back all my apps but music did not ever get backed up (even though it was on my SD card... SD card what a waste of memory lol).

And my photos won't restore in a batch but that's ok, they're all online anyway. And i DO have them, I just have to get them one by one as I need them with the file explorer app I have.

Question now though.... how do I delete the bloat? Is there a free app for that? I could have sworn I used something free last time... *scratches head. I'll pay if i have to but I don't think I would have paid and then deleted it, so I'm trying to avoid it if I can.

I don't recall it being this complicated... I totally understand what to do (as I'm looking at the warning about the homescreen). I can't run ADW or GOLauncher as it is part of what killed my phone. So this seems to delete the native launcher and that's not what i want.

I'll just have to pay for one of them and that's fine. I want GOLF and some of the other crap that reinstalled on restore to go away lol.

Titanium Backup Pro - which lets you freeze apps - is worth a buy, if you haven't already bought it. If you have already bought it, it will be a free re-install.

IIRC, the script asks you whether you want to remove specific apps/bloat. You can say no to the launcher, I believe.

(Just checked - yes, you can decided to keep the launcher.)

In fact, just to document, here are the things that it asks:

echo "(WARNING: you must already have a replacement"
echo "launcher installed such as ADW, Launcher Pro, Go"
echo "Launcher, etc.)"
echo ""
echo "(WARNING: disabling Motorola's home/launcher without"
echo "having a replacement installed will be somewhat"
echo "troublesome to recover from -- you could do it using"
echo "the dock, if you had one, but make sure you have a"
echo "replacement installed first or select 'Y' here.)"
echo ""
echo "Do you want to keep Motorola's home/launcher? [Y/n]"
echo "(this will also remove the Motorola calendar widget)"
read opt_homescreen

A factory reset shouldn't touch your SD card, whether it's internal or external. Try using a browsing tool to navigate to the cards. I've flashed many ROMs over a wiped phone and never lost a single thing from my SD cards.

As for bloat, it shouldn't be back. A factory reset will not, as said above, touch the /system partition where bloat is initially installed, so it wouldn't have come back unless you decided to SBF the phone (an SBF flashes all of the partitions and makes it box stock, the "factory reset" title is misleading once you've rooted and removed bloat. Could we start calling it a data wipe for clarity in this thread at least?)

If the phone was debloated to your liking prior to the data wipe, it will be in the same condition, sans anything YOU loaded on. Your phone should still be debloated as it was prior. Golf shouldn't have reappeared unless you 1) SBF'd the phone 2) didn't properly remove it when you initially debloated.

As for your launcher... Do you currently even have one installed?! Are you trying to get the stock Blur launcher back, or do you want a 3rd party one like ADW, Apex, GO, etc.? Unless you granted a malicious app SU rights, nothing (other than you ?via scripts?) should/could have touched your launcher.

When you factory reset on the D3 you get an option to also securely erase the internal storage and SD card, but they are disabled by default.

Pardon my ignorance here, but when you're factory resetting the phone for yourself, why on God's green earth would you choose to format your SD card(s)? There's probably a handful of warnings about what it entails.

I always do my resets through SafeStrap/Android recovery, so I'm not familiar with the phone interface method.

If you want to pass the phone along to somebody else, you definitely want internal storage to be wiped, and this allows you to pass a phone along with that wiped so that the new user starts from a new phone waiting for activation with no personal data at all on the phone (the only other way to wipe internal storage would be to step through activation and format the storage area.) Old Android phones that had no internal storage were easier - you could just pull the SD card.

There are warnings. I think. I don't particularly want to test it out myself at the moment... ;)

I know why you'd want to wipe before you passed it along, I've done it a few times when returning phones. I don't wish to test either, but I'm sure it doesn't just slide under the radar.

Thanks everyone for all the advice!!!! I am back up and running 100% and bought Titanium Pro (worth the $). The music on my SD card turned out to be in the media area, not on my card. My pictures though ARE safe and sound on my card, but because they were in folders that no longer exist on my phone memory, that's why i couldn't bring them back without a cable and a PC. All good now!
