... I recently bought a used Galaxy Ace to use for a PC Modding idea I have had. ...
What is the deal with the negative reviews and what do these people want?
I think I understand the negative reviews. A lot of the negative reviews concern battery life. Generally it's a good device. That's why some people love it. Others have run into its bizarre battery life problem. Not all of them do it, and even the ones that do don't do it all the time. Unless you're paying attention you might not notice the strange things it does.
I'm a very low volume user. Very few calls. No data plan, just wifi. An occasional email check is all. When I had my first I827 I asked, "What are these idiots talking about, battery life is great, 1% an hour on idle." That one got stolen. I bought another. Then the trouble began.
The second one was great, except when it would drop into zombie battery sucking mode. Battery usage would jump to 17% per hour for no particular reason, and it would continue that way even if you turned it off. Yes, off. Completely off. In the process the thing would get steaming hot, so it wasn't just a battery meter calibration issue.
I did a lot of controlled experiments on it. It has nothing to do with wifi, gps, background applications, syncing, or screen brightness. Putting it into airplane mode keeps it from going into zombie battery suck, but it doesn't stop it once it's there. The only way to stop it is to open the case and pop the battery out. It seems to be related to low phone signal level. The most reliable way to drop it into battery suck was to take it into my office, which takes me through a reception black hole. It would also tend to do it when I went into rural areas.
The last straw was when I got on an airplane, and when I got to my destination a couple of hours later the battery was down 40% and the thing was hot.
I sent it back to the carrier and got another one. For the first few days I owned it it behaved nicely. Maybe that was just a fluke. I could even take it through the black hole at the office. Then it started again. Over the four weeks since I got the replacement It's gotten where it does it more and more often. Yesterday it did it twice while I was at home, where the signal is generally weak but usable.
It has to be some sort of combined hardware/software issue. It does something in response to low signal level, trips the hardware into some unrecoverable condition that it can't un-do it when the signal level comes back.
So that's why some people love this thing and some hate it. The ones that love it haven't seen its dark side, or haven't noticed it. I'm still not to the hate it stage because I have some hope that there's a fix out there. I think I've read everything on the web that says "I827 battery drain" but most of those answers are from semi-noobs telling saying turn off background applications.
