Network access for apps

Ok so i have the fb app as most of us do, well at work my employer has implemented a block that blocks all social media sites so per say i log into the wifi on my laptop and try to navigate to fb i get blocked but if im using my phones fb app and im connected to the same wifi viola i have access.. My question is why that is

I think it seemed you connected to a fb server which had been blocked when you navigated to fb from your laptop. But when you used your phone fb app, you might connect to a different fb server ip address which was ignored to block by your employer.

Your phone is accessing FB via 3G/4G data?

It also depends on how your employer has implemented the website block; it could be done by DNS, IP, etc, and your phone could be using an alternate method of connecting when using the app.
