network but no web!?

Hi guys,

My Desire recently died, long story (dropped in a pub etc etc). For the time being my friend and IT guy at work has "loaned" me a work phone. Desire Z (the one with the fold our keyboard, yes?).

Anyway, I am t-mobile (now EE I guess). I was told the phone was locked to vodafone so I guess i couldn't use it with my chip (also the splash screen is voda), but there is no harm in trying right?... right, it worked! So i can make/received calls, text etc. Anything a phone 'should' do but I can't get it to connect to my (unlimited) t-mob data.

Could this be because the phone is partially locked to vodafone, allowing me to call but not web? or am i missing something?
Settings>wifi & network>Mobile network (the data setting) is set to enabled. Can't figure out what is wrong other than a possible partial lock.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

status icons? do you have any icon for data at the top of your screen? (3G, 3g with arrows above, or E, e with arrows above, etc? 1X whatever?) or do you just have bars?

The phone is most likely set to use the Vodafone APN settings. You will need to contact T-Mobile and find out what your APN should be set to.

Thanks both for your replies

Nothing, no signal. all i get is the usual - "signal" bars>battery>time - dispplay. no icon or even (popup) mention that the network is unavailable.

Ok, so if i get the APN settings (FYI I have no idea what this is) how do i get the phone to work with it?
oh! and what does APN stand for/mean?

thanks again guys

APN is your mobile access point. You set it in menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks and I believe you hit menu for options, however it's going to vary a little between versions and phones. When you talk to T-mobile, I'm sure they can walk you through it.

Go here:
T-Mobile - Help & Support
Select the Phone settings tab, enter your T-mobile number, and they should be able to send you the required settings automatically. If that doesn't work, there's a manual settings page as well. I assume you're in the UK, because you mentioned Vodafone.

Toh! and what does APN stand for/mean?

Access Point Name. Contains the information a phone requires to connect to the internet and do MMS with a particular carrier. Each carrier is different.
