Network signal drops and antenna design

I'd like to report a problem which seems to be a common place for a number of phones: unstable signal indoors and signal drop when taking the phone in hand. I have two different back battery covers and they behave exactly the same so there is no doubt that it might be any defect. Though I believe the design of the antenna is not perfect. I wonder if it would be possible to improve the current or elaborate an alternative one.

I've made a picture of the GSM antenna (in the center):

Ok you have to realize that other things can come to play.
1.It may be the phone itself and not the back-covers.
-The phone has little receptors that touch with the receptors on the casing. If these are messed up then the phone will act up.

2. Have you tried taking off your protective-case?
3. Are you an area with bad service, or where tmobile is updating bands?

Thanks for your answer. Actually I was talking about the back cover battery door and I don't use any protective case. I'm positive that the problem is in the antenna because the signal disappears completely when taking it off. I've tried cleaning the receptors. The service is ok as well, because I have an HTC Sensation connected to the same operator which has a more sure signal.

Keep on looking. :)
