Hopefully i can try and solve your issue today!
I am assuming the backplate of the phone is what you are talking about, and that is indeed strange. Have you tried doing a factory reset of the device, since you just got it I am assuming it would be no big deal. Otherwise try doing a factory Hard reboot, by removing the battery and putting it back in.
If none of these work i would suggest going back to the distributor and getting a new device.

Putting th eback on shouldn't cause you to loose your signal. Sounds like a fault in the hardware and if the factory reset DC suggested doesn't help then taking it back like he mentioned might be best. If you need further assistance we're hear for you.
