New (ahem) User

Salutations, greetings, and whatnot,

I am a new Android Forum user and a highly aggravated Android user. If it were not for my current financial situation, I would have abandoned my Android phone quite some time ago. I stumbled upon this site doing research in a futile attempt to resolve some of my Android issues. Now, I am beginning to be aggravated by this very forum. I signed up to share information with someone who had a logical, but ill-informed, view of how the Android system functions. First, I could not send this user a message (vital, useful, beneficial information) because I had not earned (by writing enough posts) the ability to send a private message. Well, that was frustrating, but what made it worse was the fact that this forum did not inform me that I could not send a private message until after I tried to send the message, which I spent a lengthy amount of time composing. Thanks for being so informative and time-saving! I find it insulting that I was not notified of my inability to send a private message as soon as I clicked the link to compose a private message and I had to waste all of that time and then click the 'send' button before I had any notification. "Hey, this user can't send a message, but let's just sit back and watch this user for awhile, see what the user writes and once the user is ready to send the final message, then we'll stop the user.....in the meantime, let's just observe and enjoy." Okay, well it was frustrating, but I had another outlet, another vessel, another solution to distribute useful information to people. I would just post a reply to this user on one of the threads where I initially discovered him and his belief. NO GO! Apparently being a new user and a "potential spammer" (what the hell was the purpose of CAPTCHA then?), I can not include any links in my initial posts. Also, I guess there were some "key words" that triggered their attention. I feel like this forum does not want me to share any useful information with its users. The same feeling I would get from my carrier, my phone maker, Google, Microsoft, and numerous other sites on the web I encountered while researching some of the unsettling, unexplained activity on my Android phone. "Nothing to see here, move along." "It's normal. Don't worry about it. Hey, have you tried Google maps yet?" "WARNING! DANGER! DO NOT ENTER!! YOU MAY GO BLIND! YOUR GENITALS MAY FALL OFF! CONTRACTING AIDS IN THE FOLLOWING SITE IS HIGHLY LIKELY! IF YOU WANT TO STAY SAFE, YOU WILL NOT SEEK ANSWERS IN THE FOLLOWING SITE YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO LINK TO!" Wow, I've never seen a warning anything like that, nor so many, until I began to research unexplained files, folders and activity on Android. This whole Smart phone OS stinks to high heaven!

Hello and welcome to the forums - thanks for joining!

Sorry that your initial experience has not been so great... I will be sure to bring your message to the Mods/Admin's attention. You have now posted your first post on the forums, so would be able to post links now!

Welcome DueMoEvil!

Sorry you ran into difficulties. There's nothing specific that prevents new users sending PMs, but your message may have triggered our spam-reduction filters if it contained links, images or certain keywords.

The "no links" prohibition for new members is, I'm afraid, a necessary precaution. While checks like CAPTCHA etc foil non-humans, they won't prevent old-fashioned human spammers from signing up and flooding the forums. It may be an occasional inconvenience, but we feel it's justified by the end result. AF has over 900k registered users, well over 10k online at any one time, and maybe a dozen or more new members joining every hour, yet is remarkably spam-free for such a huge site. That's something that our members definitely appreciate.

Hopefully you will stick with us and find out for yourself.
