Welcome to the Android Forums!

A SD card, or on the case of most Android phones, a micro SD card, is basically just a small storage card. It's basically like a small disk drive to allow you to store data, music, and videos on the phone. They're available in different sizes and plug into a slot on the phone.

As for firmware, the phones operating system software is normally loaded in firmware. This is typically read-only memory located in the phone. You can make it temporarily writeable but that requires special privilege gained by "rooting" the phone.

First place to start learning about your new phone will be the forum specific to that device. Best way to learn? Start reading and asking questions...
