I am in the process of buying the Samsung i5800. I am switching from Symbian and am a little confused over how much control you have over the phone and apps. S60V5, I could forbid almost anything to access data. There was an app called Smart Connect that would set up your connections the way you wanted them managed.
Now I see a lot of apps want a connection - I can see GPS, and Skychart, but except for downloading a book, why would an ereader need a connection?
How much of the installed stuff can you get rid of? I don't use any social media on the phone, I don't watch movies or Youtube on the phone.
Contact list has a lot of unprintables if the spammers start up. I don't use push email, I do use Google webmail. I also don't need Maps, I have a freestanding Garmin. I also have a USB MP3 player built into the truck.
I do use the camera, and am used to a 5mp but I also usually carry a DSLR, so that isn't too much of a problem. I also don't play games, except for solitaire and bejeweled.
I'm actually more of a PDA/Phone user. I want all my information where I can get at it without having to carry 3 devices.
I have seen a few astronomy apps I want, but can you stash charts?
I get to places where I have no phone signal at all. I would need to store charts and info. No one seems to tell you.
I see the update for this phone is out. Are all the parts explained?
Nokia would fix something like a Facebook connection, and then say "minor improvements" I never could get an answer about what the "minor improvements" were.
My C6-00 was/is a nice phone. But Nokia corporate got my goat with some policies. The last straw was installing an extension in Firefox without my knowledge or approval. I've used Samsung's PC Suite, and it isn't half as obnoxious as Ovi. Plus I was assured that there were go-rounds to phone managers.
The phone is unlocked GSM. I'm with TM and do have a data plan. I tend to use my wifi at home more. I picked this phone for the 2.1 OS. I will need some version of Skype and I suppose I will have to hunt for the app. I had to hunt for it for the C6, too.
I'm not too sure about not having a physical keyboard, but I'll reserve judgment on that.
Is there any chance that someone will write a Palm emulator or a way to run Garnet on Android? Styletap doesn't have an app for Android.
Thanks,
Zuben
