Most of what the author of that article did is easily done without rooting, so you don't have to worry. At the end, he went a little overboard, if you ask me.

so you don't see a need to root for basic users? i mean i been reading and seams like the battery issue and ATT apps running all the time.

A "need"? nope. I always leave new phones unrooted for at least a few months, just to get a feel for the stock experience. They usually don't have any terribly insurmountable issues. My original Nexus One was unrooted for close to a year and worked great. Rooting isn't mandatory to get a useful device, in many cases, it's just fun.
