New android user here

Hey everyone, I just got my 1st android phone a week ago. I got a used Motorola Droid from a friend. I've already done a lot of app downloading and tinkering with it but I need some help with a few things. First off could anyone recommend any sites for tutorials or good app reviews? I's there a good site to go to to demo the ROMs that are available for my Droid? I don't know how to code but I am somewhat of a geek. I have an A+ certificate so I do dabble in some technical things.

My first problem is that apps randomly open in the background all the time. Almost every time I open Advanced Task Killer Free (except when I just opened it less than a minute ago) there are about 4 to 7 apps open that I didn't open. Some of these apps I haven't even opened for the first time yet. I don't think I've ever seen more than 7 or 8 apps open like this at any time.
Sometimes my phone seems to freeze up for a few seconds and the touch screen doesn't respond.

I figured out how to make ringtones that I can use for when I receive a phone call but I don't know how to add a ringtone to use it for apps or text messages. I am just using the standard messaging app that comes with the Droid I think.

most settings of android like sounds, display, etc are in the settings app (just like an iphone) you can set the notification sound to something you like. this sound is used for most notifications (ie. email etc)

you can override this setting in applications though. if i want a different notification sound in gmail, i just go into gmail, press menu and find the notification settings there.

I believe you might have to put your files in a folder named ringtones in your sd card tho im not sure you have to search

Android works like this for apps
some things that are needed by the system will automatically open in the background (like mediascanner everytime u plug ur sd card in, itll scan for new songs) these apps might not close when they are done

but dont worry! android automatically closes apps when the memory is needed. u do not need to do task management yourself.

if you have an app running and you do want to close it, press the back key
pressing the home key will just stuff it in the background like the other applications

there ARE poorly coded apps though, who waste resources and hold up the system, but it is up to the user to figure it out thru comments and self testing

multitasking in android is similar to the iphone (hold home key in both), though with OS4.x iphone has upgraded the experience (closing apps), android is yet to change this (recent apps as opposed to running apps and unable to close them). I recommend downloading

"system monitor by nextapp" as a task manager.

Hopefully 2.3 - 3.0 versions of android will fix this and make a proper task manager
