New Android User Question

Hi everybody,
So yesterday I bought the Galaxy Player YP-G1 to replace my iPod Touch. I love it...except that it has issues with storage. I have a 16GB sd card in it, however, even with only a few apps already downloaded, it says I don't have enough space. So it is storing many apps on the device itself while I transfered what I could to the sd card under manage applications. Is there no way (without rooting and yadayada) to just use the friggin SD card!? That would be dissapointing to only have limited amount of space for apps depending on the devices space itself. I may have to go back to iPod if this is the case, which I REALLY don't want to do :(

HELP?

There's a way to set the default setting to install to the SD card. It doesn't work for everything and is a little involved, but doesn't require rooting.

It's not a setting, per se. Here's how you set the default install location to your SD card, no rooting required. Just be aware that a.) widgets, services and polling apps should always be installed to your phone's internal memory. b.) Any new widgets and services installed after you set the default location must be checked and moved back to internal memory before using them, and c.) Even with the default location set to external memory, some apps will always install to internal memory.

If you've got 2.2 or higher You change the default location to the SD card like this ... (And, once that is changed you can move even more apps to the SD card, even though they were installed to internal memory.)

You'll need to have the Android SDK installed. How-To Install Android SDK On Windows, Mac and Linux

Then on your phone go to settings>applications>development and enable USB Debugging. Plug your phone into the PC using the USB cable.

open a command prompt on your PC (start>run type "cmd" press ENTER)

Change directory to the android-sdk-windows\tools folder

At the prompt type
Code:
adb devices
and you should see your phone listed as a serial number.

type
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
Done.

Now the default location to install apps is the SD card. And, some apps that you couldn't move to the SD card will now be able to be moved. If you follow the steps above and you install a widget afterwards, you will need to go to settings>applications>manage applications and manually move it to the phone. If you want to set the default install location back to the phone, you simply repeat the process but use
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0

Wow, i am really dissapointed/sad :( I was so excited about jumping off the iPod bandwagon but may just have to jump back on due to this. Android is so much better though! Ugh! If only this whole sd card thing weren't a problem :(

I cleared the cache and tried to move as many apps as I could to the SD card. It still gives an error about space when trying to dl from the market. It has like 1.7gb of system storage and 5gb of usb storage. It saves the apps to the 1.7gb of system storage. Maybe google will eventually fix the problem and then I will buy it back if I return it?

How many apps did you store? I have more than 150 apps and I havent even used up the 1.8gb storage for apps on my SGSL. Perhaps you encountered the Market bug where even if you have more than enough space for apps, it says there is not enough space. All you should do is clear data for the market app and then reboot.
