New android user

I Mahesh kamath form india and bought a new Android phone with 2.3.5 gingerbread op system. I should accept my knowledge about the phones and android in perticular is nil. I wish to ask is android OS similar to PC operating system you are provided with basic and you have to install all what as per you need. Now this is the second day I spend all night reading and understanding the manual. Sitill I am running the videos on the camera video player. Please guide in some way how should I proceed . Should I down load a video player If yes form where , which is the best , need to pay of its free etc. Please tell what are the basic apps need to be installed.
