Experiment. What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.
I'm willing to pay for apps I like and use a lot.
Right now my launcher is ADW Ex (I like that I can use the full screen real estate by hiding the default launcher bar, and have a 'hidden' bar that I can bring forward by swiping my screen a certain way), and I'm using Fancy Widgets Pro for weather. I've used Beautiful Widgets in the past - both are equally good for clocks/weather/etc in my opinion. That being said, I use Minimalistic Text Widget for my clock and the date.
If you want more ideas, check out the screenshot threads in the Atrix forum (or other phones forums), or check the mother of all screenshot threads on XDA here. Most people will be happy to tell you how they've accomplished a particular look if you ask them nicely (and reference the shot you're questioning!).

I recommend 3g watchdog, and circle battery (to give you a better idea of battery life then the standard 10% increments). You probably also want a launcher to get rid of motoblur, I use launcher pro, but as mentioned ADW is also good. If you want something to emulate the sense clock/weather forecast,you can use either beautiful widgets or fancy widgets.
Out of the apps I got, I suggest the following:
*Google Voice - allows you to mask your real phone number with the google-number. Also allows you to forward voice messages to the Google "server", where they can transcribe your voice messages to you. Transcription is not 100% perfect, but good for those times when you can't just call your VM service to listen.
*Yelp - no real explanation needed. Good for travelling or just plain-out looking for places to spend your dollar. The 'monocle' is a marvelous idea!! Don't know what I'm talking about? Download Yelp app and use the "monocle" function
*"AndroidLost" or "Wheres My Adroid" - both are tools to find your lost Android phone. Whether it's buried under a sofa cushion or left in the refridgerator. There's Pro's and Con's between these 2, I have both and trying them out to see which one I like more.
AndroidLost allows you to control your phone via website control, AndroidLost.com. You can even send commands from this website to take a picture shot of where the phone is. For example, if you accidently left it at the park or something. You can send the command to take a snap-shot of it's surroundsings (front or back lens) to see where it's at. Or you can GPS locate it. The information is then sent to your email account - usually your GMail account - depending on what you set your email account as.
"Wheres My Android" is another similar app, but works off of SMS messaging. You set a unique message which will set the phone off (ie. ringing and vibrating) or use it to locate it's GPS location. Not quite sure how the GPS functionality works yet.
Either app, you can use to locate a "lost" phone. I think "AndroidLost" is a better app if someone either stole or picked up your lost phone. That way you can track them down.
*GasBuddy - app connects you to the gasbuddy.com database where people enter in gas prices. If you're ever pinching that penny, you can use this to find the nearest and cheapest gas pump. Or you can use it on travels to find the nearest gas pump in general. Works off your location, so data connection is needed.
*Amazon.com AppStore - hey, 1 free app a day, can't beat that. Sure, sometimes the app is worthless or defective, but why not?
*PaperToss - hey, you need something to waste time right? Why not start with this simple app? AngryBirds is overrated, haha!

Here are a lot of apps that I use that are very helpful. Sorry for the long list, but I hope you find some that are useful.
Books
1) Youverson Bible App – Gods word with over 40 translations at you fingertips, with offline viewing and reading plans. I really love this app. It even lets you highlight text using different colors. Now my phone can look like my bible.
2) Dictionary – Word look up and Thesaurus.
Entertainment
1) HBO GO and Netflix – Watch movies using your current subscription. Outside of the size of the screen, I forget I’m watching TV on my phone. (I hook my phone up to external speakers.)
2) ESPN Score Center – keep up with all the sports and your teams info, game schedules and scores.
3) Movies – See current movie info, trailers, times and location, DVD release dates and future movie dates.
Travel
1) Weatherbug Elite – keep up with current weather, alerts and use the Doppler radar to see approaching storms.
2) Flightview Free – if you travel a lot or have family that does, this is a very simple and useful app. Keep track of flight status live all the way to gate info. Can save flights as well. I use this every time I travel.
3) Google Sky Map – See a map of the stars, planets, constellations horizons, etc. when you hold you phone up to the sky to see what’s out there.
4) Google Earth – Explore the world right in the palm of your hands. See detailed pictures and descriptions’ of landmarks, etc.
5) Google Places – Find anything your looking for using your current location, shopping, food, etc.
6) Car Dock – Since I don’t use the Motorola car dock, the stock car dock app doesn’t activate.
7) Copilot Live USA V9 – Offline mapping. A must have incase you lose data for Google maps.
Fun
1) All three Angry Birds games – They are fun and addictive
2) Air Hockey Speed – Fun and able to play two player
3) Pac-Man
4) Roller (Lite) – Like skyball
5) Spades and Uno – Card games
6) Pinball HD For Tegra – This game is really cool and fun to play.
7) SimonClone – original Simon says game.
Health
1) CardioTrainer Free – I love this app. Helps you to stay in shape and has a lot of features.
2) Calorific – Simple calorie log app of your days eating.
3) First Aid – look up anything from symptoms or what to do in an emergency.
Productivity
1) Quickoffice Pro – Able to create/edit Microsoft word, excel, PDF and power point presentations. This comes in very handy if you don’t have a laptop or netbook.
2) ES File Explorer – manage files on your phone and SD card. You can even access files from home computer or netbook by wifi.
3) Colornotes – Simple but useful note taking and check list app. Can password protect individual notes and can backup and restore them. Also, can place notes as widgets on home screens.
Music
1) Volume Control – Set up to 3 different profiles to preset different vol. settings for media, ringer, notification, alarm, etc. This is useful if you listen to your music thru headphones. So instead of having to adjust each vol. setting, you select the profile you named “Music”.
2) Pandora – Create your own radio stations for listening free music.
3) iheart Radio – Listen to local stations free.
4) PowerAmp Pro – This is a great replacement music player. (They have a free version too.)
Shopping
1) Tips Calculator
2) Discount Calculator – I’m not good with numbers to when I see a sale and they don’t have the actual price listed with the discount, that’s where this app comes in handy.
3) Google Shopper – Easy to look up a product and do comparison pricing.
4) Coupons – Has daily coupons to send to friends or family.
Misc.
1) ADW Launcher Free version – Replaces the stock launcher, Motoblur. I love the customization, being able to backup my home screen layouts and settings. Additional hidden dock bar, so I can store a total of 10 apps with both dock bars.
2) Screen Shot It – Allows you to take screen shots of your home screens. It has been very useful.
3) Timeriffic – Allows you to set as many profiles to turn on/off things like: Mobil Data, Bluetooth, ringer, notifications vol., airplane mode, media vol., voice call vol., vibrate, wifi and system vol. You set the profiles by days of the week and times of day. Works really well.
4) Screen on – Allows you to select certain apps when open, the screen doesn’t go to sleep.
5) Kitchen Timer – Really useful and can set up as many presets as you like.
6) Ultrachron Lite – This is a great stop watch. (I know the Atrix has one too, but this one is so cool.)
7) Car Maintenance – With two vehicles, this will help keep up with which vehicle needs what.
8) Battery Left Widget – keep an accurate % as to how much power is left in 1% increments.
9) Apps Organizer – Allows you to group apps in folders to place on home screens. (If your on GB, you won’t need this.)
10) Data Counter Widget – Keeps track of mobil, wifi and tethering data.
11) Handcent SMS – I use this in place of the stock SMS app. I love it. A lot of customizations and features.
