Root new & confused

Hi everyone, I'm Kristi.
I got the G1 when it first came out, and now I've got the mytouch 3g which I've had for awhile. Before I rooted it, it wouldn't let me tether to my macbook, but I heard a rumor that a rooted android could do it. When I got an iPad, I couldn't accept spending another $30 a month for mobile internet, so I decided to root my phone. I am in no way into computer/phone mods or whatever it's called, but I wiggled my way around this tutorial:

and loaded their custom rom. I even went as far as to install the wifi tethering app to my phone, but that's where my luck runs out...my macbook & phone will pair, but not connect.

Here are my questions:

-can I tether my mytouch to a macbook or ipad WITHOUT root?
-now that I have rooted (from cupcake) do I need to upgrade to whatever dessert is next?
-how do I tether?
-and what else do I get to do now that it's rooted?

I feel like I did the hard part but somehow my reward isn't coming

pleeeeasssse help, google just turns up a lot of crap when I try to search for answers, apparently my phone isn't cool anymore so nobody's modded it since like the 90's

I dont have a MT3G but to update, you need a stock recovery i think, and maybe a stock ROM. Dial *#*#checkin#*#* *#*#2432546#*#* and itll find the updates. You should be able to get Froyo (2.2). You should be able to get cyanogenmod and can find alot of cutom ROMs on xda. Also most wireless tether apps use ad hoc netwrork. Some can do infrastructure with mods to the kernel i believe.

Also with root you can overclock (speed up the cpu) this also requires a custom kernel which is part of most ROMs. Custom ROMs also have other tweakes and such to increase performance and stability. And the ability to remove any app you dont use. You can change your theme. There is an online theme kitchen. Ill post a link in a few. Just need to pull your framework-res.apk and upload it.
