Help New contacts imported into gmail showing up in some apps only

cdl

Android Enthusiast
I have a Sony Z5 dual sim running Marshmallows.
I imported some contacts into gmail; I first exported the existing contact to CSV, then used the file as a template to create my import file (I only needed a handful of the initial fields).

All the new contacts appear in gmail; however, they do not appear in all the apps on Android! Notably, phone and contacts do NOT show the new contacts. Other apps, however (the k9 mail client, drope contacts, a voip app) do have access to and do show these new contacts.

I have tried all the usual IT approaches:
  • manually syncing contacts
  • clearing the storage data for the system appa ContactStorage and forcing resync
  • rebooting
but nothing works.
I logged in gmail again and switched to the old interface (the new one is useless); I noticed gmail had automatically created a group called "imported on dd-mm-yyyy" and there was a text "These contacts have been imported but not merged". I clicked on merged and resynced the phone, but still nothing.

Any ideas?

I have found the solution.
The contacts app has a 'filter' option; I tapped that, and noticed that some groups in my gmail contacts, including the group 'imported on dd--mm-yyyy' had been deselected. Why or how, I have no idea, though! Selecting all the groups here shows all the contacts.
