Help New HTC Explorer

I just bought a new HTC explorer with a 1GB sd card. I need to change to a larger sd card but every time I insert a new sd card it does not read it. Do I have to format the sd card before inserting into my mobile or is there an application whereby I can do it directly from my mobile? If I do not have to format the sd card, what I am doing wrong?

just copy and pest your old content into the new one..i have tried..and it worked.

Export the data on the old SD card then import to the new one.
