New M8 - a few things....

notacoach

An "unplanned upgrade" from my One X (read - it got doused and died) meant I had to just hold my nose and buy the One M8. I'd always planned on sticking with HTC - I LOVE(d) the One x - but this was a little sooner than I'd envisaged! I think in a perfect world I'd have preferred the m7, but since I'm here now.... may as well get the most out of the new device. :)

1. Do Not Disturb. It works GREAT, and I would love to use this feature regularly, except..... when I switch it off, sound doesn't come back on unless I reboot (at which point everything is fine). Is there a fix/workaround/setting for this?

2. It seems to be using more data - a LOT more data - than the One X. I'm steaming through it so fast I'm never gonna make it to the end of the plan cycle without overage. Use is approximately the same. I've turned off Blinkfeed (although I actually kinda liked it), and am only using Google Now at specific times when I may need it. Is there something else that may be background downloading that I'm not aware of? Or does it process browser images differently so it's "costing" me more data?

3. I note that the bluetooth and voice recognition functions are WAY better than in the One X. I'd love to get the most out of voice features - is there a tutorial/article/something somewhere to read? In particular, I'd love to be able to get it set up so I use *only* voice commands when using my jabra tour speaker in the car, but haven't figured out how to do that yet. Also, is there a way to command it to text without opening the sms tab first (at which point I can click on the mic on the keyboard and it works great, but I'd prefer 100% hands-free if I can make it work).

Thanks in advance!

Overall, I do like the phone. I think I'd have preferred the slightly smaller m7, but this is a really top-notch device. Possibly more phone than I "need", but since I have it, I will enjoy it! It's MUCH faster than the One X, and battery life is a huge improvement (my battery was getting old and not lasting too long, so this is a big bonus).

Welcome to the M8 club! I have not personally experienced any problems with Do Not Disturb mode. I would take a look at the article on Do Not Disturb <-- here and see if all the settings are correct. I would also make sure that you do not have any 3rd party apps that can manage volume control installed that may interfere with DND's operation.

Worst case you may have to do a factory reset. Occasionally when a software update is released (if this applies to your phone - Who is your carrier) the update can cause strange issues to occur that can affect the operation of the phone and a factory reset is needed to restore correct operation. Before you do that though I would definitely let other users chime in on their experiences. They may have another solution.

Large amounts of data usage can be attributed to a lot of things. Blinkfeed for the most part uses very little data. I would go into settings >More (under wireless settings) and data usage. What apps are using the most data? Sometimes you find that background data is the culprit, especially with apps like facebook or mail apps that you have downloading large attachments in the background.

As far as texting, if you have the google now mic on your screen you can just press it, this activates voice recognition and you can send texts, call people, play music, send emails, navigate, etc.. using the "Ok google" command... There are a ton of commands. Here are just a few articles on using it:

What a wonderfully helpful response! These are just the links I needed. I'll have a read and play and get back to you...

Keep those replies coming, folks - this is so helpful!

Got an ATT firmware upgrade this morning - now have the extreme power saver mode! The battery life so far has been *awesome*, but nice to know that feature is now there for whenever it may be needed.

Have also (FINALLY) had time to play with the camera some more - the onboard HDR is a very pleasant surprise, as it is excellent!

Tx! Slowly getting up to speed. Drastic data improvement after update. Not sure if that's from the update or simply that I've got me settings tweaked, but big improvement.....

Lucky! On Verizon i had to root and install a ROM to get power saver and extreme power saver. It's kinda bs how much Verizon removed from the htcs software and there not even planning to add those features anytime soon. And welcome to the club. Hope you enjoy the m8 as much as I am:)

I need help finding text messages that are on my girlfriend's phone that she said got sent to cloud or other storage place is there anyway to get messages back I really need some help with this thanks a lot

We'll need more info than "got sent to the cloud or some other storage". Presumably this means she used some backup app, so if you can tell us which one that will help.
