Help New Nook user cannot get google apps other than those offered by BN

As one who has not rooted his Nook Tablet yet, I'm still trying to find useable apps for mine. Going outside of BN to Google apps for Nook Tablet, I cannot dl any of the apps. I get an error msg that includes a lot of reasons for this including my device does not have the capability, I have no Google Play App (something about a white shopping bag, and a whole page of reasons. This is frustrating since I cannot even find a decent maps app from BN.
My Nook software is 1.4.2 but I do not know what android flavor I'm using.

Simply, how do I get apps from google without rooting my Nook?
Thanks, Tom

DISCLAIMER: I'm a Nook Color owner, not Nook Tablet. But I thought I'd reply, since no one else has.

You can't have it both ways. On an unrooted device, the BN apps are all you've got access to.

As far as I know, you can't install apps from a web site. You have to root in order to install Google Play Store. Same goes for Amazon's Appstore for Android.

I believe you can side-load apps if you revert to version 1.4.0.
I was able to setup side loading and download apps from Amazon on my un-rooted Tablet. I just Googled and found a method that was easy to do (came from the ebook-reader web site).

I bought the cyanagenmod 16g sd card for around $50. I have been very pleased with the apps it provides, including the google PLAY APP. The sd arrived 2 days after my order.

You do realize you can pick up a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch tablet with Android 4 ICS and unrestricted Google Play Store (market) access for $250, right? You'll also get GPS, camera and bluetooth, and a noticeably smaller and lighter device.

If you're going to run off of uSD, at least save yourself some cash and learn to do it yourself so you can fix things when they break!

You do realize not everybody can drop $250 on a whim, right? My Nook Tablet was $60 on Ben's Outlet. I had to save for a while to afford my Toshiba Thrive for $210.
