Root New OTA & Root: Caution

Not sure if okay or not, but I know to keep root with the leaked update, you had to use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to first save your root access (SU) and THEN do the update.

If correct, a lot less trouble keeping root.

+1. If you want to keep root on the new update or the newest .174 leak you must run rootkeeper BEFORE you update. If you update without rootkeeper you will have to fastboot back to regain root.

I'd go further and say more clearly that you can NOT root .173 &.174 directly. You have to root prior to the update and use OTA root keeper as the exploit allowing root has been removed.

Sorry for being a knob but can someone explain "exactly" what I need to do using OTA root keeper before I install the upcoming update? Thank you in advance.

Before you install the update open root keeper and select temp unroot with backup. Then after the update installs open root keeper and select restore root.

FWIW, I did not do temp unroot. I simply lost root with the OTA, then restored root with OTA root keeper (having set it up first). YMMV.

Correct, you do NOT have to "temp Unroot" with rootkeeper. As long as you have the root backed up, you just install the update, then open rootkeeper and restore root.

This is very good thread, especially since I'm considering upgrading from my Eris to Razr Maxx.

My concern regarding the root before OTA is what may or could happen at time of purchase. What about if the store rep does an OTA? I recall on past purchases the rep saying "the phone is just doing an update. Soon as it's done, you're ready to go."

Any thoughts or experiences with this issue? BTW I'm a Big Red subscriber (Verizon).

For now, you can always fastboot back to previous versions so that you can root it first. I've personally just always said "I'm very comfortable with Android and after we confirm it powers up and makes calls/receives texts, I'll take care of set up and updates on my own."

While it may work to not do a "Temp Unroot", for me (VZW in California) I had to do a temp unroot before the OTA would work correctly. Even with apps unfrozen, the installer was bailing for whatever reason (most likely some superuser control that my root would not give up). But once I did Temp Unroot, did OTA, worked like a charm, then did Restore Root and was right back to where I was before, with the upgraded OS.
