I'm trying to tether to my stock rooted Xperia Pro (the Nexus is stock rooted too)

Can someone guide me through exactly what I'm supposed to do.. I've tried the portable Wi-Fi hotspot in the Tethering & portable hotspot menu on the Xperia (the USB tethering doesn't seem to like the OTG connection)
I've also tried the Wireless Tether app from the marketplace.
Is the Nexus 7 supposed to automatically detect any available connections (it doesn't) or do I have to enable something..?

Thanks.

EDIT:

Thanks to all who tried to help.. but it's my stupid fault, I thought I had a data plan that allowed it apparently I don't.. c'est la vie

I've tethered with the Motorola triumph, the nexus picks it up fine, shows up as android on the 7's WiFi. Your phone might not support tethering but you can bypass that with Bluetooth. Put the Foxfi app on the phone and the Pdanet app on the 7. Use the Bluetooth settings on both, it'll walk you through it the first time, after that it'll just connect.

Thanks, I'll give it a try & report back.

EDIT:

Nope, configured & paired everything phone/tablet.. but no connection.
Am I missing something very simple & blatantly obvious, for example do I have to adjust some setting on the Nexus 7 to detect this new connection etc?

I've found setting the phone to be a wireless portable hotspot is the simplest way to get a connection. All you have to do is enable it and set some suitable password, and the Nexus should find the phone's network. Have you tried this?

Well I'm really confused now, according to FoxFi Wi-Fi is not supported (only I have a Tethering/hotspot icon that says active at the top of the phone) and I still can't connect.
Then I try to re-activate & I'm told 'Fail to activate Internet not detected'

Get into your phones wifi hotspot setup menu, setup the SSID and passphrase, it sounds like your just turning it on and expecting it to work.

On your N7 i recommend creating a shortcut to the wifi settings menu, which is where all available access points will be listed.

I've already set up the SSID/password.
By Wi-Fi settings menu do you mean PdaNet Tablet..? and if not where is it, all I can see in the N7 settings is Wi-Fi on or off.
Also where should I enable the Wi-Fi from.. FoxFi, the phones own tethering/hotspot menu or both..?

Thanks.

In the big space below that will be listed any visible (and/or remembered) Wifi, your hotspot should appear in that list when active. Touch on it, enter your passphrase and bobs your uncle.

There are also advanced settings hidden away in the menu at the top, but you should really need these tbh.

download Foxfi to phone and tablet

download PDA.Net to phone and tablet,

turn on bluetooth in foxfi in both devices.

Open PDA.Net in N7 and hit connect

Job Done!

I'm sure that will work too, but all you need to do is download and enable FoxFi, assigning an id and password then ANY wifi capable device can connect knowing the password. I did also install the extra part of FoxFi, but don't THINK it is needed.

I technically have to pay $30/mo to tether so just loaded to test. I wish I had a non-unlimited plan where tethering is ok up to your limit.

Cheers for the help it's much appreciated, I'm fast losing the will to live though.. it's still not working.
FoxFi is on, the connection is detected & says connected on the N7, iv'e selected it & entered the correct WPA security key, it says the signal strenth is excellent.. still can't browse, email, YouTube etc
Wish I knew WTF I was going wrong..?

Fwiw I use "wifi tether" from the play store on my Meanrom'd evo lte and it wouldn't work either, but like you said it shows up but it won't connect to the Web. .. Come to find out I Needed to set the device profile to "android-ics". And enable the routing fix option. So it may not be your phone it could just be the configuration. Hopefully someone can help you out further! :)

Hey thanks for the info, hopefully there's something that can be done.

All you have to do is what gbynum suggested. Install FoxFi on your phone, set it up with an SSID and passphrase, start the hotspot from within FoxFi, and your Nexus 7 should see it as a wireless network. Connect, enter the passphrase and you're good to go.

That is EXACTLY what I've done & although there is a connection as far as both devices are concerned there is NO connection when I try Gmail, Youtube or whatever browser I try, the connection strength Icon is also greyed out.
There is obviously something else going on here, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.
I'm sincerely hoping that someone here can come up with a solution as I'll be doing a lot of tedious travelling this weekend & could use all the distractions I can get.

Is your phone enabled to act as a WIFI hotspot? You may need to work with your carrier first or modify your phone settings. I have been using "Tethering Widget" by Hi-Develop on my HTC phone for wifi tethering. (I also tried FoxFi and PDA.Net as damiencannell suggested above for Bluetooth tethering, but find it much slower than wifi on my 3g phone.)

You could try "wifi tether" its free on the play store. That's what I use. I've heard mixed reviews about fox fi

I really don't know.. how do I go about finding out & modify in what way/how?
I'm on a GiffGaff PAYG sim which supposedly has unlimited data allowance on all plans.
