New phone ‘complaints’

I just upgraded my phone, something last done 4+ years ago. Two major issues:

Last time I upgraded, Titanium Backup was very useful. I simply back-upped up some apps (primarily small games) on the old phone, restored them to the new phone, and everything was there including the app’s data. Now, there is no way (that I have found and about which I have asked) to move an app’s data from the old phone to the new. This should be trivial, but it does not seem possible.

On the old phone, I used True Phone as my default dialer and kept an older version of the default dialer on the phone for listening to voicemail and blocking/reporting a number as spam. The old version of the default dialer does not work on the new phone, the new version of the default dialer won’t run unless it is the default dialer, and I have yet to find a voicemail app that supports Google Fi.

If anyone with Google is reading this: You darned well better address these two issues because if more people experience these same issues, they may start leaving Android…

My photos are backed up on Google Photos, and my phone contacts are backed up on Google Contacts. I only need a couple of apps due to webpages not working well on mobile, but the username and password are saved in Google Chrome. Years ago I use to have one casino game, but their game server saved my data.

I'm sure there is probably another Google backup app, but I have never needed to use it. When I get a new Google phone, they mention transferring data from an old phone to a new phone with a USB cable, but I have never needed to use it.

I use the Google phone app with my dual Google Fi and AT&T SIM and eSIM and they both work with voicemail.

That's never been a problem for me, and last time I done that I used Samsung Smart Switch.

Can't really comment on your second issue, as I don't know this "True Phone", and I think Google Fi is USA only, You leave Android, you ain't going to be using Google Fi with an Apple iPhone.

Sadly, many 'upgrades' are not upgrades at all. I found that out the hard way too many times. Until they make a phone that has more features than the Galaxy S5 without compromises, I'll stick to my S5. I don't need a huge screen, goofy gestures to replace buttons, no headphone jack, no expandable storage, no IR blaster, no home button, and certainly not a stupid flat UI that reminds me of my time with CP/M and Windows 1.x. That was a dark time and I would rather not be reminded of it.

titanium backup is exclusively for rooted phones. are you rooted? what phone do you have now?

for me smart switch works with most data, except for app data. its been like this for a very long while now. not an issue for me. i am very happy with my z fold 4.

Yes, I am rooted; but no, TB does not seem to work any more
I thought that Smart Switch was for Samsung devices only...

What phone do you have? Most have their own transfer apps, which vary in quality (Google's one was a total failure when transferring to my Pixel 2).

Have you tried checking on XDA about TB? It's not much use if it can't restore app data, but I don't think it's been developed for a few years now so it may have stopped working (or it might depend on what phone you have).

I can guarantee that Google aren't taking any notice of anything we write here, so it's a waste of time warning or threatening them. And they absolutely would not be interested in addressing problems with TB working: they may allow bootloader unlocking on Pixels, but they don't actually support rooting or modifying phones, and won't see it as their job to fix individual apps if the developer can't. You have to be realistic about what you get annoyed with them about, and a third party app not working, whatever app that is, is not their problem.

The last time I used Titanium Back up was around four years ago, so I back up my photos to mostly terabox, and my contacts to google contacts.. I do tend to deleted a few of them because either they are so caught up with themselves, or even a justify surfacing a lie covered up from another lie..
