New Phone, First charge?

I'm expecting my brand new GS3 to arrive tomorrow , and I'm wondering how I should charge it straight out of the box.

Should I plug it in straight away, and leave it alone without touching it for hours and hours until fully charged?

Should I just start using whatever residual charge is in the battery without plugging it in, until it switches off, then plug it in and fully charge for hours and hours without touching it? [does it in fact have a pre-charged battery?]

Should I plug it in straight away to charge for hours and hours, but freely play with it while it is on charge?

In short, I don't want to screw up my battery by doing the wrong thing to start with. I have heard that the battery system is different than that on HTC phones and requires a different process, but I don't have a clue who holds a definitive answer.

With Lithium Ion batteries, charging frequently does not degrade them (they have no memory effect like nickel cadmium batteries). I'd say use the phone however you like when you first get it.

No matter what anyone tells you there is nothing you can do to greatly effect the battery life of your new phone. If it has enough power to get you through the day, use it! If not charge it when you can during the day while setting it up. No matter what you do it will make little different, just use your phone and enjoy and do get OCD about the battery.

Discharging the battery till is is 100% dead WILL harm the battery but other than that the L-Ion battery would just like to be charged while you sleep or ANY time you wish.

The one thing I am a bit old fashioned about is the first charge. The one time I just used the charge that was in the battery before charging it was with my old Motorola RAZR (the flip phone, not the current line), and the battery life of that was never up to scratch. When I replaced the battery I gave the replacement the traditional long first charge before using and it was about 40% better than I ever got from the first battery.

So since then the one bit of the old-style battery advice that I stick to is that new batteries get a long initial charge. After than then yes, I do whatever I want. It may not match the theory, may just be superstition, may be that I got a bad battery the first time and 2+2=5, but for the sake of a few hours I figure why risk it.
