A subset of related permissions e.g. "Location", "Phone", "SMS" etc. There's a good explanation here.

What happens if you don't auto update apps? You can usually see permission changes then.
That's exactly the suggestion made in that piece I linked to. Updating manually also allows you to see the release notes for the update and check for potential pitfalls.
