New razr Max! adding music & other noob bs ?'s....

Hi,

Just picked up a Razr max & an unlimited talk/text/data plan for a $100! Sorry for not doing all the requisate research, but I'm leaving on a six week moto tour tomorrow and need to prep the device & pack up. I plan to learn a lot while I am traveling, but for tonight, I'd like to get some music on it. I have never had a smart phone before so i am quite the newb, but I am fairly technically inclined. I have had an iPad for a couple of months that my work gave to me (not impressed), so i know a little about the iOS.

I play mostly mp3 & a little flac. I'd prefer to not be broadcasting every song I play to the big V.

Should I use the my music app or download another player? If using the stock player, can I just put music in the empty sd using my pc in folders and play it? Is there another player that allows me to manage my music this way?

I use winamp light portable as my player on my pc becuase it's light, doesn't try to do/be (every) other things and protects my privacy. I notice they have an andriod version, good?

Do you really need a google account to download any app or can you get them from other websites?

Any other advice that can help get me off the ground would be appreciated.

Sorry to be asking such silly questions, but I got to spend the night packing.

Let's see what I remember.

Off the SD card make a /MUSIC folder, and then make it by artist/album/ then the songs...

VERIFY that all your songs are there after you remove the usb cable. Some of the early testers had to reset the stock music app.

Stock music app is fine. But you can certainly download the winamp client, and then choose which to launch. Just make sure the settings are there where you want them on stock, ie... unlimited data = online only... not unlimited, make sure it's set to local music only.

Easiest is to just copy music to a folder, then verify it's there. There are some wifi sync or other tools out there. I'll leave the music/sync pros to point those options out!

You can hook the phone up to the computer and drag and drop the music files onto your internal memory or sd card. They'll recognize on the phone and you'll be able to play them.

Music players are all preference. I prefer Google Music because I tend to stream my music. There is a winamp player available android and I remember hearing good things about it (it's just not for me).

Yes, to DL apps from the Play Store you need to have a google account. It's free and takes virtually no time to set up. It's always possible to get apps from other places but typically they are pirated and infested with malware. IMO, do it right and get it from a legit source.

Have a great trip!

I use google music and I do NOT stream my own personal music, even a few that bought in the google play store! I think the "Play Music" app defaults to stream, can't remember. Worth going through the settings.

I'd rather have 'em close to me, just in case there's a network problem or some other issue, etc.

Thanks for all the help. I won't be streaming or sharing any music, I need to keep my data close to me and discreet. ;)

I have gotten enough tunes on my SDHC to get me to MT & I can swap music as I go. I may post more stupid newbie questions from the road, but hopefully in MT, I'll root & have wifi & be able to do my own searching.

It's a lot of stuff to fit on a bike! We'll see how the morning goes.

thx
