Check the APN details are present and correct for your particular carrier, also you must have data enabled to retrieve/download MMS. It should be under Settings > Networks, or something like that.

Yeah, it wasn't any of those... actually it could have been... But now I will never know... I tried to install something that I shouldn't have....ended up having to reset phone...hahaha. I haven't had to try since then so I don't know if it works or not but I have made sure all my settings are where they're supposed to be

I'm sorry, but I'm stuck almost from the start. I opened an administrator cmd win, typed "adb devices", it replied "List of devices attached" and it never continued. It's still stuck there.

Here's what I have done before getting to this point...

-- Downloaded Root(Z981).zip
-- Downloaded and ran/installed the two items shown in post # 2
-- Enabled developer mode & USB debugging & Unknown sources & OEM unlocking
-- Connected USB cable to 64-bit Windows 7 Pro machine. Phone mounted normally and showed storage folders.
-- Navigated to C:\adb
-- Entered "adb devices"

What have I done wrong, please? What should I try now?

THANKS!

You may need to install the ZTE drivers & minimum fastboot-adb, if using Windows.. It's in the stock device, just connect USB and select "charging" and change to "install drivers".. Should install easy. Reboot and try again

Thank you VERY much for your speedy reply! I got a little bit further, but I still haven't reached a prompt. After following your suggestion, I now see two additional lines:

* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *

But it's been some time, and it still appears stuck.

Ah, wait. How do I enable ADB debugging on this phone? I have USB debugging, but I don't see adb debugging...

Hang on, I fixed it I think by disabling "Charging Only" & Enabled MTP

I feel terrible that I keep pestering you kind folks, but apparently I needed additional instructions. Everything in the pdf in the main zip file worked, but when I first booted up in TWRP, it kept saying that it couldn't decrypt the phone. Also, root apps like TitaniumBackup insisted that my phone was NOT rooted!

So I tried using the Wipe button in TWRP to wipe the data, but after a dozen rounds and rounds,I'm now to the point where if I press the Reboot button, it tells me that I shouldn't do that because there is no OS! What do I do now?

If you have a PC download an os. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262904004195. Go download this one its armondo's.

Hook device up to PC transfer the os over to phone along with gapps. Flash ROM then gapps then boot. Its going to take like 10 to 20 mins the first time. The link to all the software you need is on here. You need to pic ARM 64 7.1 full then click download also click the md5 checksum and save that file as well. Move these to your device. https://opengapps.org/

Thank you, grick! I greatly appreciate your help. The files are now on my phone.

Please forgive my newbness, but I think I'm supposed to boot into TWRP, then install the two zip files?

And after that, re-try this thread's root procedure?

Uh, now I'm seeing a "frown" with a circle running along its arc. What's up? Does this indicate it's currently flashing?

Yes the ROM first then the gapps then boot. After boot go to the browser on device and search for magisk manager 7.0 and get the apk file. Install it. Then open it and let it scan. Its going to have a red x beside magisk meaning you need do install it. Click the install tab and select download only. Its going to put the file inside the download folder inside the internal SD card. After its done reboot back into recovery and select install. Chose /storage/download then the zip file. Install it then reboot. Now you have magisk. Read and chose carefully as to what modules you install in magisk.

No open command prompt and simply type CD c:\adb and hit enter.
Then type adb enter

If you see a list of instructions your in the correct folder with cmd. This keeps it out of your registry. Now type adb devices. If you see your device serial number beside the words device then your ready. Start transferring. If not look at ya device and select the check box always allow.

It's now been about 45 minutes. Respected sir grick,is this telling me it's still flashing, or is this an error indication?
