New Samsung Galaxy S3 User needs help.

I'm coming from an iPhone, so I'm still learning this android phone. I have all of my music on a SD card and there's been two occasions where my phone was reading the files incorrectly and most of my music was missing. I decided to pull the SD card out and reinstall it. That did the trick where it was reading all of music correctly. Does anyone have a clue why my music is doing this periodically? It's a simple fix, but still aggravating.

Hey Jeff, im a new member here too.
Currently an iPhone user but thinking of getting the S3 as the iphone 5 looks disappointing from the rumours.

What are your first impressions?
Worth changing or stay with iOS?

Did you format your SD card prier to putting any files on it? If not, I would recommend formatting it then put your music back on and see if that helps.

So far, I'm very impressed with this phone. The possibilities seem endless compared to the iPhone. If I can get this music issue resolved, I'll be 100% happy with this phone and won't ever go back to an iPhone.

I've put my music on this SD card several times because I keep having issues. The last time I deleted all the music by formatting the SD card, so to answer your question, I have formatted it. I will ask, is there a certain way to format the card? I did notice I had different options in formatting.

I don't think it's something you or the phone is doing wrong. SD cards, specifically microSD cards, are often counterfeit devices that are made to look like name-brand SD cards, but either do not have the capacity, speed, and/or reliability of name-brand SD cards.

I think you have a dud card. It's either defective or a counterfeit device. Try returning it to the manufacturer. If they give you a lot of grief, it's probably a counterfeit device. If they exchange it, they're probably legit.

I usually buy my SD cards from Amazon and read reviews and ratings before making my purchase. I also don't usually go for the cheapest one.

I got my SD card at Walmart. It's a PNY sd card. Are they not good?

I've done some more testing and I've narrowed it down to what causes the issue. When I restart my Samsung Galaxy S3 the music doesn't load correctly and I've noticed a few times it doesn't load at all. The only way to get my music to load correctly after restarting is to take the back off and take the SD card out and reinstall. That's done the trick every time.

So it's one or two things. Either I have a bad SD card or the tray on the phone is bad. Would you agree and if so, which one would you think it could be?

PNY is good. I've used their cards before. Walmart isn't likely to carry counterfeit devices, anyways. We get a lot of users who buy SD cards off of eBay and such places, so I just assumed you may have gotten a counterfeit device.

Get an exchange, you just may have been unlucky with your SD card. It happens. If the new SD card doesn't fix the problem, then suspect the phone.

Thanks for the replies, but I figured this out on my own. I just wanted to post this in case someone else has issues like this. When you shut down or restart your phone, you need to unmount your SD card. I did several tests. I tried restarting 3 times without unmounting it and all 3 times it loaded my music incorrectly. I tried it 3 times with unmounting first before I restarted my phone and all 3 times my music loaded correctly.

For those more advanced than I am, does this make sense?

No, because Android unmounts the SD card when it shuts down and remounts it when it boots up.

I just rebooted my S3 without unmounting and remounting the SD card, my music is intact on my SD card.

Crap, I thought I had this figured out. So do you think there's an issue with my phone since it's apparently not unmounting my SD card on a restart? Is there a setting for this or does it suppose to do it automatically?

Honestly it should unmount automatically and then remount when it boots back up.

I would go with what jerofld said and get an exchange or try another SD card, if that doesn't work I say it's probably a phone issue :\
