Help New Samsung User, help!

i am totally and utterly confused right now. i have had my samsung s3 4G LTE for a week now and im just about getting to grips but im having a few problems!

• my battery isnt holding up very well
• what the hell is rooting
• why are there anti virus apps
• sometimes if i open my gallery or play store, it just closes with the message "unfortunatley, gallery has stopped working"
• if i factory reset, what will i lose?

I know i sound completley and utterly stupid but im not, i was very clued up with an iphone/ipad + blackberrys but there is so much on this phone!

1. battery life sucks
2. rooting-- not sure
3. because you can get a virus on your phone just like a computer
4. not sure on the error message
5. you will lose everything unless you did a backup from my understanding.
