Help New Set-up And Privacy Advice

Hi All

I am new to Android - just received this week - the display is awesome!

Because I have been a veteran of the ID Breach Group (4 times), let's just say I am more than casually paranoid. So, the first thing I want is to:

1.) Lock this awesome device down, shut off any tattletales that I safely and reasonably can,
2.) Remove any bloatware that T-Mobile has default installed
3.) Install some type of anti-virus software
4.) Install some type of in/out data flow monitor (I use Lille Snitch in the Mac universe)
5.) Locate an encryption application (does anyone have any experience with a TruCrypt style application. (FYI: for password encryption I use PasswordWallet since my family is Windows, Apple and Android)
6.) Being a newbie, I am sure there are zillions of things I have missed - jump in, (FWIW, I did look to see if any one had posted a "First Things To Do" - there probably is one but I didn't look in the right places - any pointers are warmly welcomed.

I noticed that Slug and Lunatic were being generous with gently helping herd us lost critters - I applaud there kindness and can't help but add an atta' boy

I know I am asking a lot - so, don't think an answer has to be War and Peace, believe me, I will appreciate any pointers, suggestions or comments

Thanks

Hi DTE!
Glad you like the phone and welcome to the forums.
Well, the first thing you're going to want to do is ROOT the device and install a ROM that has Carrier IQ removed from it. This may take a bit of time to decide, at least as far as ROM, what you are looking for.
After the phone has been rooted, install Titanium Backup which will allow your to freeze or delete apps and bloat. We should be able to point you toward some guides as to what can be deleted outright and what you shouldn't mess with, in fact I'll look for one now. ~Michael

Much of the bloat may be removed after a new ROM is installed, but if there are things you want to ditch here is a list made by someone on XDA put up, some of the names may nor all match up now because of updates, but it will be a good basic guide for now: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html

Titanium Backup can delete, but only the Pro version can "Freeze" so you can experiment with removal.

Have fun, and as with anything always do backups before you mess about! =)

I'd think it best to address the other things individually here and anything root related in the "All Things Root" area, will get better attention for your questions, though root questions can take a bit more time for a reply.
