With Verizon going to their Share Everything Plans & AT&T telling us recently their plans on this matter as well, who is to blame for carriers having to go this route ? Everyone has an opinion on this matter if it pertains to you or not. Some blame those wireless customers that use a large amount of data month after month, while others blame the greediness of their wireless service provider. Everytime this topic comes up w/ my family & friends it seems to be a very good conversation starter so I figured this would make a great thread here on the forums. Looking forward to your opinions.

i think it is 90% carrier greed.

ok.. so there are some that take advantage of the service and use a lot.
some of those pay out the wazoo for the data service.

the ones that cut corners.. if (i do mean "if") they are eating into the profit of the carrier.. then cut them. boot them off. or convert them to a planned data tiered plan. it aint that hard for carriers to do either of these options.

so.. why make a whole new data shared plans ... because they know the future is about data.. and talk is not as big.. new Voice over Data... and texting dont cost them anything.

greed.. it is greed of the carriers.

Carrier greed. Are there people who did and do abuse the unlimited plans? Yes. But I would argue that their numbers are small compared to the millions of wireless subscribers out there. Carriers know the future is data not voice and are keen to squeeze as much profit out of as possible.

*to be clear, and when I say abuse unlimited I'm not talking about those folks who use large amounts of data on their phones (or any other device for which they have purchased a data plan). I'm referencing those who use their mobile data to power their home network.

Problem is, can't do it on Verizon. Their service and coverage is unparalleled.
So is their bill. I pay $25 a month for 300 minutes (I'm about to start my new month and have used 52 minutes) unlimited text and 2.5gb of unlimited unthrottled data (256k after 2.5gb).

Looking at Verizon's prepay it is pretty crappy ($80 for their smartphone plan.)

I think it's because there are just a few carriers. If we had dozens, each would be offering something better to make themselves stand out. I *hear* that's how it is overseas ... I can't verify that though ;)

Also, I've heard good things about straight talk.... unlimited everything for $45. Beats the pants off my sprint contract ... :D

I have considered straight talk, but I have also heard (without any proof) of customers being canceled because of using too much data despite it being unlimited.

There are a number of prepaid options, but most of them seem to be using Sprint's network, which is pretty bad. I would love to see more GSM options in the USA so we can take our devices and our money to where ever we wish.

There is definitely NOT a race to the bottom going on with wireless right now, at least not yet. But VZW and AT&T better watch out, dupolies will eventually get smacked down.

I have never had a serious issue with my carriers and no matter what I do, my bill will be exactly the same. I would look at Cricket.

Besides one letter warning me of too much data roaming, I haven't had any issues with carriers either, though I've only ever been on sprint. ;)

I get overages from my wife's plan all the time, she has the $15 150MB one. But she never goes over 300MB, so I haven't switched her to the $30 2GB plan yet, because when she doesn't go over 150 (about half the time) my bill is $15 less
