New to all this and need help

Finally entered the smartphone world and man am I lost!! I have and LG Optimus V. I installed Juice Defender and everything has been going great to the best of my knowledge. However, I haven't been receiving any notifications today. Been playing wordfeud all day and not one notification. Nothing on facebook. I'm on wi-fi. My ongoing notification says Data Off (Wi-fi.) What does that mean to me? If it's off, how am I still playing the game with another user of accessing twitter? Someone please educate me.
 
Each app usually has a setting for receiving notifications.
Has something changed?
Were you getting notifications prior to installing JD?
 
Wordfeud is notorious for having a crappy notification system. Go get "words with friends" if you want a better game.
