new to android. Messaging app question

Hello all. I'm an iPhone user of 7-8 years. I just recently made the jump to android and love it. There are a few user friendly comforts I miss because I'm use to them.

My biggest one is a feature in Imessage. I miss the little dots that pop up when someone is replying to a text. This was extremely help when I would text my wife to know whether I can put my phone down or wait for the reply right away. Is there a messaging app that does this no matter what the platform? My wife is still has the iPhone and so do many friends so that feature would be nice. Thanks!

I attached a pic of what I'm talking about.

You'd need an Internet based message app to do that, which means the other person needs the same app (this is what iMessage is when used between 2 iPhones, but Apple have chosen to keep that iOS only). I personally don't know whether any of those services (WhatsApp et al) have this feature - hopefully someone who uses those will be able to tell us.

You won't get it with SMS using any app, since the network only gets involved with SMS when you hit send (you can get delivery receipts, but that's all).

That makes sense. I had thought there was a platform for android and iPhone users to use that mirrored imessage. I guess not. It's a little thing, but since my wife and many friends are on iPhone it would have been nice.

Back when iMessage was new Steve Jobs did refer to the possibility of making it cross-platform, but it never happened. I suspect that the commercial reality that it being platform-specific provided iPhone owners a reason not to switch won out.

There are plenty of messaging services, but I don't actually use any of them myself so can't comment on their features (typical British contract includes unlimited SMS, so there's no real incentive for me to investigate them).

It is Internet based, but if you are on Verizon, the Verizon Messaging App does this well. Also allows you to text from pc, or Wi-Fi only tablet connected to Internet...

If I understand your question, Kik messenger has a "typing" message at the top of the screen so you know when the other person is replying. It also has a "S" for sent, "D" for delivered and "R" for read with each message so you know the status at any moment. It also has the little dots when there was a problem and the message wasn't sent. Usually when my WiFi goes out, lol. It is available on iPhone and Android and you can message between them no problem.

Thank you. It does do everything I was thinking about but each person has to download it . I guess that's what I'll be running into. Thanks though!

Facebook messenger does this as well.
It marks messages sent, and delivered as well as read and you can see the little typing thing when someone with Facebook messenger responds.

Whatsapp has the 'typing' notification and using a combination of grey and blue ticks indicates :-

Message sent - 1 grey tick
Message received - 2 grey ticks
Message read - 2 blue ticks

:)
