New to Android, notification question

I use gchat regularly on my PC and phone. When my phone is locked and I receive a text or call or w/e the screen illuminates with the notification. When I receive a gChat with the phone locked, the screen stays dark. Is there a way to have the screen light up when a gchat is received?

Same question for other notifications like email, heytell, wwf, etc.

Just checked the general settings, didn't see anything there.
Only thing I could think of would be using an app like Tasker to automate a screen flash on notification (if that's even possible...).
