New to android/Rooting problem

Hey whats up guys,
I bought a galaxy s vibrant about a month ago and i love it so far.

I was just wondering if there is any apps that are not exactly necessary but pretty nice to have.

Also i have tried rooting the phone but every time the phone goes into recovery i get a verification failed notice.
I have
Firmware version 2.2
Baseband version I9000UGJL2
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
shout@leeSEP-09 #3
build number FROYO.UGJL2

Any info on the rooting problem would be great.
