Just upgraded from a dumb phone to an Android - Optimus V. Would love some suggestions on how to both make and receive calls without using minutes. Also where do I go to download apps both free and those to purchase. I am a complete novice with all things Android. Thanks in advance.

I am not 100% sure, but have you tried using Google Voice - I believe (having not used it myself) that this allows you to talk (via the phone and internet) to other people on Google Voice.
EDIT - I didn't realise that receiving calls was charged!?!
