Root new to captivate. not to flashing

What up guys. Im usually in the dx forums but I just purchased a captivate for my girlfriend from a good friend of mine

He has given me the phone with a clean phoenix rising rom.

My question (hopefully a droidx user may put some input or someone with Motorola experience)

How different is flashing back to stock?

With the dx we have what's called an sbf. And what it does is bring back to a clean "ota" slate. Giving you a brand new canvas to paint on.

What tools are available to bring the captivate to a clean start?

In case I want to get rid of the current rom. Im not sure about using his nandroids
because I don't know what's in them so I wanted to delete everything and start from
anew.

Also what rom is the most stable and popular right now? And is there are quick overclock app with an easy UI? or will I have to do all of the overclocking manually??

I appreciate everyones help.

Odin is used to bring the phone back to a stock state, its very simple and takes just a few minutes. it is used if you soft brick or are trying to get back to stock, adding all bloatware and preinstalled stuff back

overclocking can be done easily, there are several roms that come with it. i dont think there is a reason to overclock so i always disable it, and i usually undervolt to improve battery life. there are several kernels at xda that you can add to just about any rom, even the ones with no overclock, if you do indeed want to overclock

i use serendipity, its a nice rom. but cognition is probably the most stable, i havent used any of the newer versions im just going off what it used to be. anyway you can read the threads on xda and find the one that you think would be right for your use, or your girlfriends

Thanks very much I really appreciate your help dude. I found a lot of bugs with this phoenix rising rom. A lot of things force close.

I appreciate your help very much.

I will keep this thread updated as much as I can.

the most bugless rom for sure was cognition, im not sure about the new ones but i assume they are the same. perception also is a very good rom, Design Gears at xda is probably the most followed dev and he is the dev of cognition and perception. other than that ive found serendipity to be my favorite. i ran phoenix up to 2.0 and found some minor bugs. the only bug i have with serendipity is that i have to turn wifi off and on sometimes for it to connect after i turn it off, but that doesnt always happen

Care to elaborate?

We have no shortage of people who treat custom ROMs like they're the second coming and the embodiment of perfection. ;) It's good to get some balance.

I myself am still running stock due to no stock ROM being stable enough for me to feel confident.

I flashed coding lastnight to great success. I flashed to 2.1 and everything seems cherry.

I never knew how deep modding could get so I would like to ask for some advice on certain topics.

How do I flash kernels?

Are new kernels usually packaged up with a new rom? How can I tell if my kernel is stock? ( I know how to check I just don't know what stock is)

What is the most stable kernel out there? (If you have to do them seperately from roms. Otherwise ill just use what the roms give me)

And modems? What benefit would I see about changing this? My girlfriend complains about her phone not being as loud as her iphone could this be a radio problem??

So to flash a kernel or new modem I just need cwm right??

But then what's voodoo and steam?

And to flash roms that run 2.2 should I flash to 2.2 from 2.1 using odin?

I apologize for asking so much bit im brand new here and I want to make sure I do this right. Thanks guys!

Flashing Kernels and Modems is done though CWM and it simple and quick just be sure you have a Kernel made for the Captivate but Custom ROMs based on Captivate already have the Modem and Kernel for you but you can change them if you feel you need to. For example I use the SpeedMod Kernel because of Battery Tweaks it has but there are different versions based on the phone you have. Same with Modems different modems work with different phones. Voodoo to my knowledge is a type of file system that reorganizes your files.Pretty much any more these Custom ROMs are fast enough and you don't need Voodo but can use if want and remove if you don't like.

Thanks a lot Ron! I thought I had to flash the kernels and modems myself. I've had my eye on the serendipity rom so that'll be the rom I try outfirst.

As far as overclocking..
Is there a quick and easy app that does this for me or will I have to set these manually?? I have no problems doing so, im just curious as to how you guys do it.

I appreciate everyones help. This is why I come here more than xda.

Thanks again everyone!

serendipity comes overclocked to 1.2, it has an app preinstalled called voltage control that lets you disable the overclock or undervolt. and for fair warning, overclocking always killed my battery

Crimson thanks for the heads up! I understand that overclocking kills the battery but my gf and I have bought spare batteries. (On seperate occasions. So we now have. Two spare batteries.) We really want to get the phone to be as fast as possible now.

Have you tried serendipity? It seems to be a really stable rom.
