new to rooting - assistance request!

hi,

i've been reading up on rooting and decided to give it a go.
rather that using the unofficial s-off methods, i used the HTC official bootloader unlock process, which completed successfully after some hair pulling and cursing due to the android sdk not installing properly.

does having the bootloader unlocked mean the phone is now 'rooted', as i seem unable to install clockworkmod either via the hboot screen or using rom manager app?

thanks.

hi cleggy.

yeah that's one of the guides i had come across and read through.

the htc 'official' unlock method was a pain and didn't even seem to do squat for me, even though it applied successfully. prior to applying, the android sdk wouldn't install modules properly, error 'cannot copy folder' (av was disabled) so had to search for a copy of fastboot.exe directly from google.

in the end after much reading, hairpulling and general cursing i

used revolutionary to s-off
installed a version of clockworkmod via hboot
did a nandroid backup
installed su2.3.6.3 via hboot
installed rom manager app
updated to latest version of clockwordmod via rom manager

have tested with console and installed a couple of apps requiring root access so am glad to have got it working. not tried any custom roms yet, will probably give cyanoganmod a test run when a stable version is released for the sensation.

any recommendations for other roms?

also, i'm assuming that over the air updates on my stock rom may not work properly?

Sounds like u definatly achieved perm root then, i didnt bother with htc's method as it meant they had on record that i unlocked my phone. I found that said method by yourself was simple easy and pretty quick 2 behonest... I will admit i did doubt myself at the start getting it done but was pleasantly surprised with the results!

Now for ROM's, ive flashed a fair few of them now but have always come back to the same 1s. Im currently running CdTDroiD's Pyramid3d NoSense ROM with ADW Launcher EX running.... Boy its super fast and smooth, average RAM is always around the 250 mark :) (if your a benchmark kinda chap then my average AnTuTu score sits around the 4700 mark).
Of course your own preference on things like this makes it hard 2 simply name decent ROM's 2 flash, best bet IMO is to flash a few ROM's and try things out. Depends if you like sense or not, want Beats technology integrated, specifically themed or unthemed, whether you want to overclock so that all depends wat kernel you want.... Many things to choose from.
This should help a little [INDEX] Guides - ROMs - Kernels - Radios & RILs - MODs - xda-developers

Anything else just holla!

If you're interested in keeping Sense then i'd definitely recommend android revolution HD, fast, smooth and stable. Have been running it now for a few months and haven't got any complaints!
