Root New to Rooting

Lurker
This is my first time rooting a phone so forgive the simple questions.
My One V is on Virgin Mobile U.S. and it has the OVA battery update. Will I still be able to unlock the bootloader according to (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598964) 's directions and will these directions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751004) work?
Also, is there anything else I should be aware of or have downloaded? (HTC Sync is already installed)

Thanks!

You'll be able to unlock the bootloader and root the phone. Since you have installed the OTA battery update, you most likely will *NOT* be able to *USE* any of the custom ROMs nor custom kernels. That OTA upgrade installed a version of the radio that causes the phone to boot-loop (i.e. the phone runs for ~30 seconds and then reboots, constantly) with any non-stock ROM / kernels. As far as I know, none of the custom ROM/kernel developers have "fixed" this issue.

Thanks for the help
I mainly want to root to be able to use my phone as a hotspot and to remove bloatware. nothing too technicaly
