Lurker
I recently purchased 3-Sprint HTC Hero phones from Best Buy. They initially came loaded with the 1.5 version then I began to read some threads and found that Sprint/HTC were in the process of releasing a new updated version (2.1) that was supposed to fix certain bugs and be better overall. Well, I decided to call Srint and had a technician guide me through the installation of the new 2.1 version. Needless to say, there were some hicups through the download process, however, eventually, all 3-phones had the update downloaded. We began to experience other problems. My wife's phone would constantly lose the current location on the clock widget and very often she was unable to connect to the web. I would call Sprint and they would have me power off the phone and go through some steps and re-boot the phone. That usually corrected the problem, however, very frustrating, as you would have to continuously do this. Other issues were lag time when trying to make a phone call. I finally spoke to another Sprint Tech. who asked me if the sd cards were removed when we did the 1st upgrade from the 1.5 to the 2.1. I explained to him that the tech never told me to do this. He advised this could be part of the problem. He recommended returning the 3- phones to Best Buy being I was still under the 30-days. He also mentioned to have the sales associate remove the sd cards prior to initiallizing the new phones, which he did. My question today is, should I try and install the upgrade again by going to a Sprint store or try to have another Sprint tech via phone or should I just wait and remain with the current 1.5 version until Sprint get's their **it together and comes out with a better upgrade with less bugs? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

well, a couple of the things you mention seem pretty common across phones with 2.1. lag when dialing and losing the internet connection (you can actually just go in the settings, disable it, reenable it, and it will work without restarting the phone). the thing with the location not updating may be related to this too, or it may be that the widget is set to just use a single location or something? not real sure as i don't have the stock rom, and have all my stuff set to a single location, so i wouldn't notice this problem if it existed.

as far as seeing any other updates..i wouldn't count on it...

So far I've stuck with 1.5. I've gotten used to its problems and I'm not so sure I want to upgrade and deal with different problems. I might get around to rooting the phone and trying out custom 2.1 ROMs someday, since I could always go back to 1.5 if I don't like them, but if you upgrade to the official 2.1 you can't go back.

How long ago did you get them? Within 30 days? If so, Return the phones and get the Evo! Sprint/HTC screwed the pooch with this update.

For what it is worth, I forgot to take my microSD card out of my Sprint HTC Hero when I performed the Android 2.1 update. I have not suffered any horribly negative side effects like random reboots, terrible battery consumption, or bad lag.

So, I am not 100% sure that removing your microSD card is the problem. I did perform a factory reset on my phone on Android 1.5 before I installed the Android 2.1 update. I have also heard that some people have performed factory resets AFTER installing the Android 2.1 update as well. Frankly, my biggest issue with the Android 2.1 update, at this point, is that it keeps notifying me about the same email in my inbox every 15 to 30 minutes.
