problem 1 = screen goes darker for no reason, then light again, driving me nuts

This has to do with the settings on the screen time-out. You can adjust the settings to your preference in display.

problem 2 = screen jumps from vertical to horizontal

The auto-rotation feature allows the screen to rotate from vertical to horizontal when you turn the device. This can be disabled by removing the ✔ sign inside the auto-rotation screen box in display.

Also, you will want to check inside your device's area of support for some cool tips and info on your device. Select your device model from the list here on the home page.
