Root New to the HTC Legend and Android Devices

Hey people,

I used to be an IPhone owner but decided to check out the HTC Legend as I got bored of the IPhone. I am interested in rooting and have been searching the internet to try and get as much information as possible but I'm sure your all aware of how cluttered this information can be. I found many helpful links but there is a lot of jargon used so I end up getting lost in the pages and pages of information. I was hoping some of you guys could help answer a few questions?

Is rooting an android device the equivalent of Jailbreaking an IPhone?

Once rooted do you get access to an appstore like Cydia, Installous, AppCake etc I know these are Iphone hacked app stores but I'm curious if Android phones follow the same sort of idea?

Backing up my phone? Do I backup prior to rooting? If so do I have to use a separate Micro SD Card or can I backup on the SD Card that I'm going to turn in to a Gold Card?

I'm on an HTC Legend with stock OS 2.1 I have bootloader version 0.43.0003 any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris D.

hi,
well done on your OS switch!
The HTC Legend is pretty much already like a jailbroken iPhone with the amount of customisability.
apps for rooted phones are already available on the Market, as to getting free apps I DO NOT condone it, however purely for interest's sake, subscription app stores do exist when you pay them a bit and they give you paid apps for free, I won't list any. Piracy is wrong.
you can backup the SD you're going to turn into a goldcard, then format the card and put it back on, you can't backup the system before root though.
your OS and HBOOT version make it simples.
Just check the build version, is it 1.31xxxxx, 1.32xxxxx or different?
if the former: How To: Root the HTC Legend (Updated 12.13.10) | TheUnlockr
if the 1.32xxxxxx [HOWTO] DOWNGRADE to 1.31 which you can then root for Legend 2.1 - xda-developers
if other... say but I don't think I can help.
they're the best guides btw, used both myself.
be careful, follow the guides and you should be all right, at your own risk though.
oh and use theunlockr's Goldcard method and don't be surprised if your microSD doesn't work, mine didn't :| I had to buy a new one

@jimchiam try the Android Lounge section for that and tbh I don't know if you can, don't you have WiFi or a data plan?
