Root New to this phone, looking to root and rom it

Drogyn

So, just got myself a new (to me) S2 epig touch 4g to replace my old phone, and because I hate bloatware (and because this is what I do with my phones) I'm planning on rooting it and putting a rom on it (likely super nexus or cyanogenmod I havent decided yet).

However...

I see from a lot of the rom posts dotted around the internet that it say I should not use a JB modem when flashing, which is a bit of a problem since the phone is running 4.1.2

So how do I use an ICS modem to do this? or does the no JB modem rule even still apply? (a lot of the posts were at least 6 months old)

Also. any thoughts on which is the better rom?

Thanks... already rooted and rom'd...

playing with CM10.1 atm
I too just acquired an Epic 4g Touch (D710) and would like to install a custom ROM such as the two you mentioned. I've tested several ROMs, but have not got mobile data to work and in many cases it can't even connect to WiFi. Would you mind telling me your initial procedure starting from GB27 (4.1.2). In particular, did you have to revert back to an ICS modem and if so, how did you go about it? To summarize, I've had no trouble flashing the ROMs, just haven't figure out what I'm doing wrong relative to mobile data and sometimes WiFi. Thanks.

Yeah you can only use a JB modem if you are running a touchwiz based rom.
CM is AOSP based so you have to flash an ICS modem when you flash the rom or your data won't work.
You can get the ICS modem from here: [MODEMS][CWM][ODIN] Modem Repository - Download Them All Here! (SPH-D710) - xda-developers

Aside from that flashing is the same as with flashing any other rom

Start the phone in recovery, wipe your cache e.t.c..
flash the modem, rom & gapps and restart it.

If you go back to a touchwiz based rom you'll have to go back to a JB modem.
As always make a recovery image before you start ;)

Thanks. I've tried the following steps with CM10.2, but when complete I can't even connect to WiFi even though my rooted stock GB27 ROM connects without problems:
