newb after advice

so i finally replaces a stone age phone with the ace and have a few Q's.

1) in the box there was a micro usb to normal usb cable, now its not mentioned in the book is this just for charging from a pc or can it be used to upload files and apps of the computer on to the phone? if so is any software needed to do so?

2) my uni has an open wifi they say is for mobile devices i can connect to it and get an ip but there system requires that your uni id and password be given to confirm you are a student i can see anywhere to input these to actually uses the wifi i have found port and proxy settings but nothing for username and password, anyone know were this would be under?

3) rooting i keep seeing this but what is?

4) i have seen replacement battery's and chargers on ebay ect cheep $10 for 2 which are either 2500mw - 1800mw, are these to original specs ect or are they dodgy copy as the standard is a 1350mw and if they are genuine dose ay one know any recommended sources for the UK?

erm ok ill try me best, from what i know

1.the micro usb can be used for a whole bunch of things like sending files (mps's/movie's) to the phones memory card, so the phone would act as a usb hard drive, charging is very slow via usb compared to a mains charger,. when u plug the usb in drag the menu down from top and click "select to copy files from your computer., a window will open up on your desktop or a notification that a external storage device has been plugged in, click explore and bang theres your sd card files!

other uses include de-bugging mode for developers and adb interface for rooting and de-branding your phone and priming the settings for processor,

2. connect to your uni wifi, then open up your browser the first page to load will likely be your uni- login page. that is if it works the same is my btfon account, you should press your uni's I.T department to develop a android app for student to connect automatically like btfon.

3.rooting gives you superuser privileges , like admin account for windows but with more abilities, changing your cpu settings and able to mod ANY thing on the phone. this also gives the possibility of FU* *ING your phone big time i wouldnt bother it may also hinder you getting the gingerbread update when it comes,

4. i wouldnt trust a 3rd party battery, not for something i just paid
