Help Newbee to smart phones - some basic questions.....

HI:

New to smart phones.
- Moto E 2nd Gen
- Android 5.0.2
- Cricket

A few 'startup' questions:

To conserve cellular data 'drain':

How do I use wifi as the default for data before cellular ?

The pre installed apps - settings->data usage; I've enabled "restrict app background data" for 'obvious' ones I won't use [ maps, drive, youtube, etc ]. Which ones should I absolutely/positively leave on ?

I want to have 'today's' calendar items appear on the lock page. Is this do-able and if so, how ?

I've seen "Y5" as an app to get. Any comments or basic other apps you recommend ?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Turn off mobile data

It depends on what you use,I've got a lot of my preinstalled apps disabled.
Go to app you want to disable,And clear cache/data and force stop and uncheck notifications.

Not sure.

Don't use it,But read the reviews and/or try it.

Hope this helps.

I believe WiFi is the preferred connection by default. It should switch to saved Wifi networks automatically.

You can disable apps you won't use instead of restricting data usage. That way you can be sure they won't use any data at all. Do it this way:
Settings > Apps > All > Select app > Force stop > Disable
I can't tell you which ones to leave on. That's up to you.

The calendar on the lock screen probably is doable, but offhand I can't tell you how.

I used Y5 for a long time. Just simple little utility that switches WiFi off when you leave a location - home for example - where there is a known WiFi network and switches WiFi back on when you return. Tracks your location by cell tower triangulation, not GPS. It can save a little bit of power, not a lot, by keeping WiFi from searching for a signal. But it has not been updated since 2010. There are several other app;s that do the same thing. Personally, I don't bother with any of them anymore, I just leave WiFi enabled and let Android handle it.
