newbie android support questions

Newbie alert with first ever Android device (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 on ver 4.2.2) looking for direction regarding the forums, Android, Samsung and expectation - setting in general:

  1. Will the tab be updated to version 5 at some time? If so, who issues the update? Google, Samsung?
  2. I see nominal faults in the touch-screen keyboard, Messenger and other places. Where do I pursue possible interim fixes or work arround?
  3. Where do I find the dictionary and how do I do maintain it?
  4. Are there formal channels to submit fault reports & seek support from Google & Samsung? I have asked Samsung Chat and not received a useful response.
Any direction or reply gratefully appreciated.

Welcome to the forums! :)

Great questions, expect a bunch of answers throughout the day - including one or two from me, but for now I only have time for a warm hello.

Partial answer to your first question - you only get direct updates from Google if it's one of their devices (read: Nexus). Your updates will come either from the maker (Samsung here) or from your carrier, if it's a carrier device (they've added their logo).

While waiting for other answers, here are some answers to questions you will have coming up, most likely -

I apologize that we haven't finished the update yet, but here's our forum guide - a little confused because we just did a software change a few months back - but it doesn't totally suck -

Welcome to AF, John. :)

Will the tab be updated to version 5 at some time? If so, who issues the update? Google, Samsung?

I can't find any definitive statement on that from Samsung. The previous model, the GT-N80xx, was named in a release schedule leaked two years ago, but given the rate at which Samsung release new devices I wouldn't be surprised to find that this is long-since obsolete.

In any case, updates are pushed out by Samsung themselves.

I see nominal faults in the touch-screen keyboard, Messenger and other places. Where do I pursue possible interim fixes or work around?

In the first instance all faults should be pursued via the retailer from whom you bought the device.

Where do I find the dictionary and how do I do maintain it?

Your personal dictionary is normally found in Settings/Language & Input

Are there formal channels to submit fault reports & seek support from Google & Samsung? I have asked Samsung Chat and not received a useful response.

Samsung have email support available on their web site. They modify the core OS so responsibility for faults, bugs etc is solely theirs.

I hope this helps.
